Dave Grohl has been at the face of rock for over 20 years. He first burst onto the scene in 1990 when he became the drummer for Nirvana. Grohl was to be the longest serving drummer of Nirvana’s short but intense run. Nirvana went on to sell over fifty million records worldwide, and to be referred to by Rolling Stone as the flagship band of Generation X. Whatever Grohl would go on to achieve, for many fans he will always be seen as the drummer for Nirvana.
After their front man Kurt Cobain in 1994, Grohl went on to form rock band, the Foo Fighters. However, this time it was not as a drummer, but as front man and songwriter. Foo Fighters’ albums have gone on to win three Grammys for Best Rock Album with all six albums being Grammy Award nominated. Occasionally Grohl will still swap places with regular Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, sending the crowd wild as he takes his place behind the drums.
Recently Dave Grohl formed rock super group ‘Them Crooked Vultures’ with rock heavyweights Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age and Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones. This time Dave Grohl would once again be the specialist drummer.
Grohl’s resume reads as a who’s who of rock, forever making his mark on the musical landscape. Other bands and projects he has worked on include Queens of the Stone Age, Tenacious D, Nine Inch Nails, The Prodigy, Killing Joke, Slash and Probot, which is a side project of his focusing on heavy metal.
Known for his hard-hitting but accurate style, Dave Grohl claimed to have been highly influenced by Led Zeppelin drummeer John Bonham. Grohl has used predominantly Zildjian cymbals throughout his career, especially his time as drummer for Queens of the Stone Age and Nirvana.
As drummer for Them Crooked Vultures, Grohl continues to use Zildjian cymbals. His current cymbal set up includes:
